Data driven functional regions

چکیده

National scale changes in social, economic, and demographic variables are the result of a diverse range of interactions at the local, regional, national, and international level. Even within a single local area, there are a myriad of factors driving change and promoting stability and/or instability (Green & Owen 1990). The past several decades have seen increasing recognition that the standard administrative areas used by governments for policy making, resource allocation, and research do not provide meaningful information on actual conditions of a particular place or region (Ball 1980, Casado-Dı́az 2000). As such, there has been a move towards the identification and delineation of functional regions, commonly based on the conditions of local labour markets (Smart 1974, Casado-Dı́az 2000, Coombes 2002, Watts 2004). Ball (1980) suggests that the use of a spatial definition of local labour market conditions, such as functional regions, is of particular relevance for several reasons, including as a means of presenting information and statistics on employment and socio-economic structures, as well as assessing the effectiveness of regional policy decisions, and local government reorganisation. Journey to work behaviour is widely cited as one of the most appropriate indicators of local labour market dimensions (e.g., Ball 1980, Gerard 1958, Vance 1960, Hunter 1969), and as a result, is often used to develop functional regions. As such, a functional region is often defined as a geographical region in which a large majority of the local population seeks employment, and the majority of local employers recruit their labour (Ball 1980, Coombes & Openshaw 1982, Casado-Dı́az 2000). Functional regions are generally

Evaluation of Model-Based Methods in Estimating Dynamic Functional Connectivity of Brain Regions

Today, neuroscientists are interested in discovering human brain functions through brain networks. In this regard, the evaluation of dynamic changes in functional connectivity of the brain regions by using functional magnetic resonance imaging data has attracted their attention. In this paper, we focus on two model-based approaches, called the exponential weighted moving average model and the d...

Data-Driven Visualization of Functional Brain Regions from Resting State fMRI Data

Functional parcellation of the human cortex plays an important role in the understanding of brain functions. Traditionally, functional areas are defined according to anatomical landmarks. Recently, new techniques were proposed that do not require a priori segmentation of the cortex. Such methods allow functional parcellation by functional information alone. We propose here a data-driven approac...

Integrating fMRI data into 3D conventional radiotherapy treatmentplanning of brain tumors

Introduction: This study was aimed to investigate the beneficial effects of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data in treatment planning for patients with CNS tumors in order to decrease the injury of functional regions of the brain followed by increase in life quality and survival of patients. This study pursues a novel approach in planning for the treatment of brai...

Functional Unit Maps for Data-Driven Visualization of High-Density EEG Coherence

Synchronous electrical activity in different brain regions is generally assumed to imply functional relationships between these regions. A measure for this synchrony is electroencephalography (EEG) coherence, computed between pairs of signals as a function of frequency. Existing high-density EEG coherence visualizations are generally either hypothesis-driven, or data-driven graph visualizations...

High-density EEG coherence analysis using functional units applied to mental fatigue.

Electroencephalography (EEG) coherence provides a quantitative measure of functional brain connectivity which is calculated between pairs of signals as a function of frequency. Without hypotheses, traditional coherence analysis would be cumbersome for high-density EEG which employs a large number of electrodes. One problem is to find the most relevant regions and coherences between those region...
